Stephanie Huwiler

Curriculum Vitae

Stephanie studied Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich, with a focus on medical technology, supported by a Master Scholarship Award of ETH Zurich. During her Master's, she became captivated by sleep research while working on her research internship and Master's thesis at the Mobile Health Systems Lab within the wearable enhancement of sleep in aging project. Within her thesis, Stephanie specifically explored the interaction of brain and heart activity during sleep. For this work, she was awarded the ETH medal. Additionally, Stephanie finished top of her master's degree programme and received the Willi Studer Prize of ETH Zurich. Following her Master's, Stephanie began her PhD research at the Neural Control of Movement Lab under Dr. Caroline Lustenberger's guidance. Stephanie finished her PhD in June 2023 and continued her research at the Neural control of Movement Lab.

Research Interests

Stephanie's research primarily centers on investigating how deep NREM sleep, particularly its hallmarking brain oscillations known as slow waves, influence cardiovascular function and health. Utilizing EEG-feedback non-invasive brain stimulation to enhance slow waves, she's exploring the intricate relationship between the brain and heart during sleep, with the goal of advancing both cardiovascular health and lifelong cognitive function. Moreover, she is interested in how neurofeedback approaches to regulate brain functions influence sleep. Stephanie is also dedicated to translating these research findings into practical applications to benefit human health.
