Xue Zhang

Curriculum Vitae

Zhang Xue was born 1981 in Liaoning, China. In 2005 she moved to the Netherlands to start her bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam in 2005. Upon graduating in 2008 she moved to Belgium to undertake a master’s degree in rehabilitation science and physiotherapy. She completed the research component of her master’s degree in the Centre for Movement Control and Neuroplasticity under the supervision of Prof. Nicole Wenderoth and graduated in 2010 (cum laude). In the same year she finished her master’s degree, Xue obtained a PhD fellowship from the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). In 2014, she successfully obtained her PhD in Rehabilitation Science and Physiotherapy.  Her PhD project focused on modulating neuroplasticity in healthy individuals and stroke patients under the supervision of Prof. Nicole Wenderoth.

Research interests

Xue's main research interest is aiming to bridge the gap that currently exists between fundamental research and the effective implementation of tDCS in clinical settings with a specific focus on rehabilitation following stroke. The only effective treatment for motor impairments caused by stroke is rehabilitation training, which is time consuming and has highly variable outcomes. Thus, one major challenge in the field is to develop new therapy regimes that can be effectively applied to a large number of stroke patients, either in a clinical or home-setting.
